Rocklin Among 100 Best Places to Live
Money Magazine Money Magazine has chosen Rocklin as one of the nation's top 100 places to live. The criteria for selection included quality of schools, safe streets, low crime, recreation and cultural activity choices, charm, and economic strength, including the fiscal strengths of the local government. Rocklin ranked 65th and was one of only four cities in California to make the list.

City Manager Recruitment
After 26 years of service with the City of Rocklin, City Manager Carlos Urrutia will be retiring. The recruitment process is underway.

The candidates will be interviewed by the City Council in late September, and the selected City Manager is expected to join the City by December 2010.

Terry Richardson Retires
Terry Richardson, Assistant City Manager for Economic and Community Development retired after serving the Citizens of Rocklin for 31 years. Terry oversaw the development process during the period when Rocklin was growing rapidly, seeing the City grow from 7,500 to 55,000 residents. There is no question that Terry Richardson was a very influential factor in our development and in building one of Sacramento's premiere communities. Sherri Abbas has been appointed as Interim Director of Community Development. Terry's permanent replacement will be appointed by the new City Manager next year.

Rocklin's Final Budget 2010/11
The final budget for fiscal year 2010/11 is now available on the City's website. The City adopted a balanced budget, but additional positions had to be eliminated.

Sign Ordinance Relief Extended
The City Council extended the relaxation of rules pertaining to temporary signs for one additional year. Last year, the City was approached by a number of merchants asking that the temporary signs such as banners and A-frame signs be permitted, under certain circumstances during the economic slowdown. The City Council agreed to do so for a year, but recently decided to add one additional year in view of the ongoing economic situation. For information about the City's business sign regulations, please contact the City's Community Development Department at 916.625.5100.

Storm water Pollution Prevention - Be Part of Rocklin's Pollution Solution
(Part 2 of a new multi-part column)
Every business in Rocklin can help promote clean storm water runoff and healthy creeks and streams! What simple things can you do?

1. Want to save money on summer irrigation costs while you help reduce summer urban runoff?
- Make sure your irrigation system is set to water only as much as absolutely necessary.
- Only water landscaping in the early morning or after dark to reduce evaporation.
- Check for leaks and faulty spray heads. Adjust spray to water landscape and not sidewalk.
- Convert spray to drip irrigation.
- Check out Placer County Water Agency's website to get information on their free Water Wise Business Calls.
- Install a rain garden or rain barrels to capture wet season rain and store it for use during the dry season. For more information visit the Sacramento River Friendly Landscaping website.

2. Want to save money on landscape maintenance costs while you help keep Rocklin's watersheds healthy?
- Plant native and drought-tolerant plants that require less water and fewer pesticides to be healthy. For information about these plants and where to buy them, visit The Garden Spot or visit the California native plant landscape design tool.
- Apply all lawn care and other landscape chemicals per package instructions.
- Do not over water after using chemicals-more of the chemicals wash into the storm drain system and creeks and will not stay on the landscaping to do their job.
- Choose alternatives to control pests such as lady bugs and non-toxic chemicals.
- For more information visit the Our Water Our World website.

3. Wash vehicles at a carwash-businesses are required to capture and recycle wash water. If you wash them by hand, use biodegradable soap and park the vehicle on grass which will capture and filter the soap, dirt, and oil from the wash water before it drains into the storm drain system and our creeks.

Thank you for being part of Rocklin's Pollution Solution!
