Build It Green is a professional non-profit membership organization whose mission is to promote healthy, energy and resource-efficient buildings in California. Supported by a solid foundation of outreach and education, Build It Green connects consumers and building professionals with the tools and technical expertise they need to build quality green buildings.


Build It Green fosters collaboration with key stakeholder groups to accelerate the adoption of green building practices, policies, and programs.

Building Industry Institute (The)
California Building Officials is a non-profit corporation dedicated to promoting public health and safety in building construction through responsible legistration, education, and building code development.

California Home Energy Efficiency Rating System
CHEERS is a California statewide 501 (C) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting energy efficiency. Founded in 1990, CHEERS was approved in 1999 by the California Energy Commission as the first home energy rating provider under the Home Energy Rating System Regulations. It has an independent Board of Directors representing utilities, environmental and energy conservation and consulting groups.

Consumer Electronics Association
A useful resource for general electronics recycling is the Consumer Electronics Association website which locates nearby electronics-recycling centers according to ZIP code. Almost every computer manufacturer has a recycling program in place; some will even recycle computers that are not their own brand.

DataBase of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency (DSIRE)
Established in 1995, DSIRE is an ongoing project of the North Carolina Solar Center and the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) funded by the US Department of Energy.

Green Seal
Is a nonprofit organization that offers assistance, primarily to government and the lodging industry to support greening efforts. The organization provides manuals and other guidance for green purchasing, building, and operations.

SustainLane.us
With over 300 participating cities, states and counties, SustainLane Government provides online sustainability best practices knowledge base for state and local government. SustainLane Government evolved from the SustainLane US City Rankings, a benchmark study on urban sustainability published in June 2005. Free to government professionals and their consultants, SustainLane Government also provides a searchable network of sustainability managers, experts and practitioners, enabling government entities, large and small, to work more efficiently toward sustainable policies and practices. 2006 U.S. City Sustainability Rankings

U.S. Green Building Council

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is a community of more than 10,500 organizations from every sector of the building industry united by a common purpose: to transform the building marketplace to sustainability.

USGBC's 75 regional chapters serve as the front door of the Council, providing green building resources, education, and leadership opportunities in their communities.
